Having low magnesium levels can trigger a variety of symptoms.
Getting the proper balance of vitamins and minerals is not always easy.
Sometimes deficiency is caused by poor dietary choices.
Other times, the issue is in how the body processes these nutrients.
As for me, just to err on the safe side, I do take a variety of supplements.
According to a recent VeryWell Health article titled “What Is Magnesium Deficiency?,” both can be common causes for low magnesium levels in seniors.
Although magnesium deficiency is not very common in developed countries, those older than age 60 may find themselves at an increased risk.
To get the proper nutrients, people must first consume food.
As individuals age, they may find they have less of an appetite.
By consuming less food, it is easier for seniors to have their magnesium levels drop.
Bodies also change as people get older.
Just take a look around and then look at yourself.
Not all of these changes are apparent to the eye, however.
For example, some of these changes impact the digestive tract and make absorbing nutrients more challenging.
Those who have severe illnesses and require intravenous feeding also commonly suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
One key mineral you absolutely need is magnesium.
What are the signs of magnesium deficiency, specifically?
More mild symptoms include tiredness, numbness or tingling in the feet or hands, and cramps, tremors, or spasms of muscles.
Abnormal eye movements and heart rhythms are also common.
Behavioral and personality changes could be additional signs of a deficiency.
More severe signs of lower magnesium levels include seizures and coma.
Yikes!
A small deficiency is unlikely to present with any symptoms.
It is typical for signs to appear only after levels have seen a significant drop.
If you believe you may have low magnesium, discuss your symptoms with your doctor.
Your physician will be able to review your medical history and order physical exams.
Blood tests are typically used for diagnosing.
Your results are compared to a normal range of highs and lows for reference.
If you are found to have low levels, your physician may order additional tests to determine the full impact of the deficiency on your body.
It is important to take early symptoms seriously to avoid subsequent damage or complications.
