Veterans are targets of scams.

If you or your loved one has served in the military, you understand the meaning of sacrifice.

The freedoms our nation enjoys are protected and preserved because of the brave men and women of our armed forces.

Unfortunately, our soldiers face enemies on the home front as well.

According to a recent nj.com article titled “Veterans warned to beware of scams that target military families,” military personnel are targeted by criminals here in the U.S.

Scammers are coming after the pension of military veterans.

For example, one scam involves the pensions of retired soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines and is referred to as “pension poaching”.

Frauds can appear trustworthy.

Unscrupulous insurance agents, financial planners, and other entities offer serves to apply for Veteran Affairs benefits programs.

These individuals or organization will charge significant fees for the services provided.

In reality, the scammers learn personal and financial information.

They also may encourage the transfer of significant assets to “qualify” for benefits.

In reality, the veterans and their families may be unable to qualify for such benefits.

As a result, the poacher benefits at the expense of the soldier.

Some states, like New York, have made it illegal to received compensation for preparing applications for military benefits.

The elderly and disabled veterans are especially vulnerable.

Veterans and their spouses need to be vigilant to protect themselves from these frauds and thieves.
